Law is a prestigious field that leads those who pursue it to well-respected jobs. But if you have your sight set on law school, you should stop and ask yourself what it is that attracted you to the field in the first place. Outside of the obvious reason of wanting to be a lawyer, here are three reasons why most individuals decide they want to go to law school.

Money and prestige

Not only are lawyers known for making a lot of money, but the field itself leads to a well respected professional career. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median average salary for lawyers is $119,250 per year (May 2017). However, it’s important to note that not all lawyers make that much money.

To put things into perspective, and according to U.S. News & World Report, the average salary for paralegals is $53,180. For people who are interested in working in law but don’t want to go to law school, becoming a paralegal is an excellent option. The point being, a law degree is worth the investment from a money standpoint. Also, the same site ranks “Lawyer” at No. 1 in the “Best Social Services Jobs.”

Lawyers are placed in an elite circle of professionals, not just because of the amount of money they can make, but because getting a law degree is viewed as a prestigious endeavor that takes a lot of skill, effort, and knowledge. This respect comes with the territory and is a result of going to school for seven years after high school, which is typically the amount of time it takes to earn a law degree.

Following this respect, some in the field have earned the nickname Super Woman Super Lawyer. This is a result of hard work and a promising reputation.

You want a lot of professional options with your degree

There are different kinds of lawyers including injury lawyers, bankruptcy lawyers, corporate lawyers, criminal lawyers, and general practice lawyers. While you go to law school to become a lawyer, there are many paths you can take. For example, with a law degree, you can even become a patent attorney for the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

What else can you do with a law degree? Well, the sky’s the limit. As an example, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton both have law degrees, so not only can you enter politics and government, but you could become the president of the United States of America one day. You have a lot of flexibility with a law degree and the freedom to pursue many different professions and industries.

It depends on a job-by-job basis, but lawyers are known for having flexible hours and choosing when they want to work, as well as who they work for and who they represent.

Fulfillment: you have a passion for law and justice and want to make a difference

Going to law school could set you up for a passionate and important journey. You love law and justice, which are just two of the reasons why you want to become a lawyer, but you also want to make a real difference.

Being a lawyer, you’ll have the opportunity to help others and bring real change and justice to the world. From individuals, to businesses, to communities, to public figures, you can help make a difference at many levels. Law is your passion and you want to work in a field that’s fulfilling. Certainly, law school will help you get there.

There are many reasons to go to law school and become a lawyer. Be it money and prestige, flexibility, or finding fulfillment, if law is your calling and passion, then law school is right for you.
